The Online Blackbird Museum

The driveshaft is hooked to a gear housing on the top of the cart that corresponds to a receiver on the shaft of the blackbirds's J58 engine.  In spite of the fact that each Buick engine produces almost 400 horsepower, they still need a 1:2 gear ratio on the gear housing in order to spool up the massive Pratt & Whitney turbojet engines.  The Buick engines redline at 6000 RPM, and the J58s need a minimum of 3000 RPM to run under their own power.
